TMJ Therapy Chicago

TMJ Therapy combines careful evaluation with gentle hands-on techniques to help the jaw and surrounding muscles work more comfortably together.

Understanding TMJ Pain

The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect your lower jaw to your skull. Together with the surrounding muscles and connective tissues, they allow you to speak, chew, swallow, yawn, and express yourself through everyday facial movements.

When these structures become irritated or overloaded, discomfort isn’t always limited to the jaw. Many people also notice headaches, facial pain, neck discomfort, ear symptoms, or changes in the way their jaw moves.

Pain is complex and isn’t always a sign of tissue damage alone. Muscles may tighten to protect a sensitive area, movement patterns can change, and the nervous system may become more sensitive over time. These factors often influence one another, which is why I look beyond the area that hurts.

Rather than focusing on a single muscle or joint, I consider how your jaw, neck, posture, breathing, and everyday habits work together to determine what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Treatment should never feel overwhelming. I continually adjust my techniques and the amount of pressure I use based on your comfort and how your body responds. My goal is to help reduce pain—not create more of it.

There isn’t a single answer for everyone. Recommendations depend on how long you’ve been experiencing symptoms, your goals, how your body responds, and what is identified during your evaluation. We’ll discuss recommendations as your care progresses rather than deciding on a predetermined number of visits on the first visit
